Sitting on the couch in my mom’s house on Christmas Eve I’m looking across at the mantle and admiring the stockings that are hung (with care, of course). My Grandmother is one of the most talented fiber artists I know, though sadly she is no longer able to sew or knit because of arthritis in her hands. When she could though she would sew the most beautiful quilts and knit amazing sweaters.
My favourite thing that my Grandmother has made though are the stockings that she knit for all of us when we were children, mine is one of my most prized possessions. My mom, dad, sister and I all have matching socks, as they are called in our house, and they are unbelievable detailed and delicate. I can’t even imagine the time and skill that went into each one of them.
I am not a knitter but I thought that my nephews needed their own special personalized stockings and so last year I put my embroidery skills to use and stitched their names on some traditional Canadian wool work socks. I love the way that they turned out and I hope that they will be a special part of their Christmas memories for years to come.
Want to make your own special stockings, here’s some great ideas!
It’s almost time for Christmas Eve dinner here in Canada and then it’s straight to bed to wait for Santa! I hope that everyone has a wonderful Christmas filled with happiness and good food!
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
