I live in a small town outside of Chester in the northwest of England. The Shropshire Union Canal runs through town not far from our house and it’s one of my favourite places to go for a walk and feed the ducks and swans. There are lots of places where you can rent these huge canal boats and lots of people rent them out for holidays and just travel around the country in them. People even live in them full-time! The aquatic version of a caravan.
The boats themselves are beautiful and always have gorgeous old-fashioned names and flowers painted on them in glossy primary colours. When I ride my bike along the canal I’m always jealous of the people taking long languid journeys in these little floating homes – maybe someday I’ll rent one myself and set off on an adventure. What a wonderful way to while away long summer days.
